What’s your gear actually worth?

Three quick steps about one item and you get a number you can post, the band it should sell inside, and every condition adjustment we applied to get there. No sign-up, and the number is not behind an email.

Tell us what you have

Brand
Model· as it is written on the body

If you bought it used, or you cannot remember what it cost, put what a comparable new one costs today. The estimate depreciates from there.

Grade it honestly

Pick the grade that matches the item in front of you. Hover or tap each one to read what it means.

Overstate it and the buyer opens a case before you’re paid, so grade down when in doubt.

Anything wrong with it· check everything that applies

These come off less steeply than you might expect, because the grade above already carries most of the condition. Checking them twice would price the same scratch twice.

Shutter count· leave blank if you don't know

The single number that most decides what a used body is worth. A blank is left out of the arithmetic rather than guessed at, in either direction.

What comes with it· this is where people leave money

A few things worth knowing

Where the number comes from

One of three places, and we always say which:

  • What the same model sold for here, when enough of them have.
  • What used-gear dealers are asking for it. This is most of them today.
  • What it cost new, aged for how old yours is, if we have neither of the above.
What we won’t do

Make one up. If we don’t know what your model goes for, we say so instead of inventing a figure. Every adjustment is shown with the reason next to it, so you can check it against the item in your hands rather than take our word for it.

It’s an estimate, not an appraisal

We can’t see that yours is a rare version, that everyone wants this mount right now, or that it’s a slow month for used gear. Treat this as the number to argue with, not the last word.

Be honest about the grade

It changes this number more than anything else, which is exactly what makes it tempting to round up. Don’t. Overstate it on a real listing and the buyer opens a case before you get paid. The scale is published in full.
